K so I'm very inexperienced in dating and all. So I need some opinions:
Here's the scenario:
In am 22. My coworker is prob. in her 40s. She has a son who is 18. She asked me if I wanted to go out with him, or atleast meet him. So she brought him in the next day.
My questions are:
1) Is it weird for a girl to go out with a 4 year younger guy?
2) Is it weird for a mom to set it up?
Obviously I think it is a little weird otherwise I wouldn't even be asking :)
OPINIONS PLEASE, PREFERABLY that it IS weird and why.

This has gone beyond ridiculous. I absolutely hate NS Power. An expected 13 hour outage because of wildlife? Good thing a salty cloud wasn't around at the same time -- it would be days before the lights came back on. They're charging more, their top execs make stupid high salaries, and their customer service SBHMC.

I as was happily walking home from picking up a parcel my Mom sent, filled with goodies, enjoying the pleasant weather and thinking what a wonderful Mom! I happened past the entrance to Sobeys, this is what I saw:
A Mother, her two kids (maybe 10 and 13), ALL FRIGGIN SMOKING! WTF! Hellooooo you stupid bitch! You're giving cigarettes to minors! One, it's illegal. Two it's fucking stupid! Take your crack ass badly dyed blonde head to a clinic called "Get a fucking clue!"
And while walking past the Lacewood bus terminal some punk ass is skateboarding with a 12pack of beer. Farther down the road, I'm about to cross in the crosswalk and I almost get hit by a speeding way over the limit hello the crosswalk light is flashing jackass bus!
What the hell is wrong with people!

A couple of months ago I was at the mall and I strolled into a store that caters to all things New Age, if you will. Front and center was this book/DVD set and the wacky sales girl wouldn't shut up about how "glorious" it was and how it offered the world a whole new kind of hope. I was intrigued for about 2.6 seconds until my gut was able to catch up to my brain. It shouted "Bullshit Alert! ** beeeeeeep ** WARNING! WARNING!" I obeyed and I walked out of the store with a $10 pair of Celtic earrings instead.
Not long after that Oprah did a show about it. My response: "God love her but the woman has finally jumped the shark."
Then I got the book as a birthday present from a good friend so I cast aside my doubts and started reading it. She was totally on target for my taste in gifts as I enjoy reading about different ways to view the world and so on. However, after reading a few "chapters" or whatever they were, I realized I was right the first time I came across it in that store. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

Onika Claire Heffler was diagnosed with brain cancer just before Christmas. This little girl is the daughter of my best friend. Her Mother Juanita was my best friend through highschool and even lived with me and my family for about a year. Onika is now almost 7 months old and is a big fighter. She has undergone brain surgery and now she is going through chemo. Onika had her latest MRI done last week and the family found out that the tumor is not responding to the treatment. So they are now trying some new chemo to see if that will help. This is a young family who deserve all the happiness in the world. Please check out the website and send some positive thoughts and prayers to this family as they are going through something that nobody should ever indure.

So I went to see the movie 300 in IMAX yesterday and I was not disappointed in it at all. It is hyped as the first blockbuster of the year and it doesn't let you down. Overall I would say that it has at the most maybe 10 pages in total of script. The dialogue although not long is very well done. A lot of "Save Sparta from the heathen Persians" speaches which is the basis of the movie.
Gerard Butlter who plays King Leonidas was amazing in this film. A Kings king and a soldiers soldier would be the best way to describe him. The Queen in the film is portrayed amazingly by Lena Headey who is beautiful and did an excellent job. This film portrays woman as strong as the men which I think is very different from sterotypical movie roles for woman. I like that aspect of this film. King Xerxes is an imposing figure who towers above King Leonida and has a voice like Darth Vader and face piercings that rival Captain Lou Albano.
The battle scenes are right up there with Glaidators but I found them to be even better. The idea that 300 Spartans with a little help from 4000 Arcadians hold off hundreds of thousands of Persians. One scene in paticular where the Spartans in formation march towards the oncoming Persians with a little Evanesance type music in the background was really good.
There is nudity in the film, a lot of nipples and breasts, and I never knew Greece was that cold. A scene with an Oracle (a beautiful see'er of the future) who does a mystical siesure cirque de solei type dance until she works up a great sweat, and then gets licked by something out of The Hills have eyes is something I didn't get. I guess it's that whole mythology/Greek thing.
Scenes of boys and soldiers walking around in the snow in just sandles is a little far fetched to me but it has to do with the "toughness" of the Spartans (a shout out to all those Dartmouth High alumni).
Overall I liked the film, it is going to look good in HD and DVD. During the battle scenes I found myself ducking and dodging in my seat along with the Spartans on the screen. Maybe that was the Imax experience. I would suggest if you are going to see this movie, pay the extra money and go see it in Imax it will be money well spent.

I am not sure if any of you are following the Pickton trial, but I just discovered that there are two former sex trade workers following the trial. I can't imagine what it must be like for them.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to share with you some disappointing news I heard about the Breast Cancer Society of Canada. According to a recent article in the cbc.ca, the organization refused a donation from the Exotic Dancers for Cancer (which was formed by exotic dancers in Vancouver in memory of a dancer who lost her life to breast cancer). I find this to be deplorable. Check out the article here:
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/02/08/bc-dancers-cancer.html?ref=rss
What follows is a letter that I sent to the Executive Director of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada, Rany Xanthopoulo. If you feel as strongly about this as I do, I encourage you to question this decision as I did.
Jeannine :)
Dear Ms Xanthopoulo,
I was very disappointed and disheartened to read that the Breast Cancer Society of Canada refused a donation from the Exotic Dancers for Cancer. I cannot imagine why an organization such as yours would ever further stigmatize a group of women who face daily stigma and discrimination from our society.
I am outraged as a general citizen, as a worker in public health and most importantly, as a woman. Aren't we supposed to be working to change society's stereotypes and views about the sex trade and exotic dancing? Exotic Dancers for Cancer formed in memory of a woman who died of breast cancer, and now they are being denied the opportunity to support that cause. That is deplorable and completely unacceptable.
If you can explain to me the justification for a decision that to me screams of judgement and discrimination, I welcome your response.
Jeannine McNeil
Halifax, NS
p.s. I am sending a copy of this letter to all my friends, colleagues and will take any and every opportunity to post it on public blogs.

Today is Toque Tuesday and there are people all over the city selling hats and scarves. Its a national campaign that happens once a year to raise awareness about homelessness in Canada.
I just bought one of each (I buy them every year) and this is the first time I realized all of their merchandise is made in Canada. Bonus!
For more info on this campaign or to order merchandise online, check out http://www.raisingtheroof.org/tp-toque-index.cfm

Okay, I am watching the halftime show and I have to say, Prince's two back up dancers are horrible! They are dressed in black- and honestly, their dancing is brutal. They are not doing any moves that would indicate they know what they are doing. I am surprised Prince would not have professional dancers (if they are professional, they need to go back to school!)
I think Prince's performance is pretty good though...

The Mailman begins his quest of becoming the most beautiful person - by association... or perhaps more appropriately by dis-association.

I just recently cancelled my landline, and now exclusively use a cellphone (a brand new krzr, which I love!). I am wondering if fellow Spiners can recommend any good long distance options.
I would prefer not to buy a calling card whenever I need to make a long distance call (in fact, it is one of the reasons I held on to my landline for so long). I will mainly be making calls within Canada, with the occasional call to the US. If possible, I'd like to have a plan that does not require a minimum payment per month, which I am not sure is as common with cell phones.
Any ideas?

Hello Fellow Spinners (and all you invertebrates too),
I've been listening to Spineradio for a few months now, since Steve was on CommandN. After the first show I wanted to leave a comment and I had to sign up for an account before I could post a comment... ok... this site is from Halifax... I think my "Personal" information is safe, and it's not too far to go if I need to break some legs because I keep getting spam. But now I'm stuck with Another blog... I have my work blog, which is usually work/technology related and it has its purpose. Then there's my own website with my own personal blog, which I never find time... I mean never make time to update. And now there's this... and I'm not sure what to use it for, but I do want to use it.
I see some potential in this site, and it could become something interesting.
Now, I need your help, let me know what you think I should try to blog about in here, Music, General News, local news, anything and everything... the Show itself?
Steve, what is YOUR vision for this site, a watering hole for Online Haligonians?
-- Jessy
